I have been through this journey many, many times and this time I actually am finding answers! My last blog post in 2012 on my Curly Girl update seems so long ago. Somewhere between 2012 and 2014 I gave up on my curly locks and went back to wearing my hair straight. It was just something I felt was easier for my hair.
My current look
Here we are in 2020 and I’m trying it again! I have naturally curly hair and I’ve always hated my curls. I spent many years straightening my hair with chemicals, flat ironing and damaging it with heat. Pony tails and messy buns were my (almost) everyday look. It was just too much for me to handle.
It has truly been a journey
It’s been over 3 years since I flat ironed my hair (except for special occasions). This time around…I’m sticking to it and I’m actually seeing results. I’ve found a new routine that works for my hair and new products. I knew my hair always had potential. I just needed to learn how to manage it and what products to use. My biggest gripe was that it looked great right after I styled it. But as the day went on and my hair dried, it curls didn’t look so cute. I’ve learned along the way that my hair needed major moisture! I didn’t quite know how to maintain the moisture.
Currently my curls have become more define, but I still struggle with moisture, protein and frizz. As most curly girls, I have gone through a plethora of products. My bathroom cabinet looks like a beauty supply store!
The more I have been reading, watching You Tube videos and talking to others going through the same journey, I feel like I learn new things. My favorite on YouTube is Manes by Mell. She is so knowledgeable and funny! I know my hair has potential, I just need to give it the right TLC and learn it’s ways all over again. I also had the chance to speak to a curly girl stylist via a virtual consultation. Daze was so helpful and recommended products for me and ways to help my curls. She also do virtual haircuts! Yes, I said virtual haircuts! But I’m not there yet. I’ll definitely be going back to her once I figure out my curls and find a good routine.
The life of my curls
It’s all about the products
So I know hair integrity is important, but it’s all the products. So for the past few months I’ve been trying to give my curls extra TLC while trying to find the best products for my hair. Currently the products I’m liking are:
Clarifying: VERB Clarifying Shampoo
Shampoo/Conditioner: Maui Moisture
Co Wash: CurlSmith Conditioner Wash
Leave In conditioner: DevaCurl Matcha melt moisture masque (It’s a mask, but I use it as a leave in)
Gel: Ouidad Climate Control
Cream: AG Re:Coil Curl Activator
Oil: Aussie Miracle Curls Curl Defining Oil
Treatments: Olaplex No. 0 and No. 3.
Deep conditioner: DevaCurl Heaven in Hair
